But first, let’s understand the basic funda of blogging.
What Is Blogging?
A Blog is a record of your thoughts, opinions, or experiences that you put on the internet for other people to read.
To simply put, Blogging is everything or anything you put out or published on the internet for other people to see or read.
Who Is Blogging For?
Blogging is for anyone, yes you heard me right – for anyone who has the interest or passion to write and has the understanding of how to make engaging content that will be profitable in the long run.
Even If you have no idea about how blogging works and how to get hosting, you can start one of your own blogs after this tutorial.
And If you clearly know what you want your content to be, how your site is going to look like, etc, but do not have the time to invest in it you can outsource them at those Freelancing sites like Fiverr or Upwork or you can drop me a mail to help you set up your very own WordPress blog site with reasonable price.
The quality of your blog and how much traffic you generate is what matters for earning through blogs.
The way to make money by blogging is to find the problems and providing practical solutions to those problems.
The most important secret to become successful in blogging is choosing a Specific Niche, Write Deliberate Content jam-packed with Specific Value that people will find easy to consume and helpful and that is what Google wants and actually looks for. The key here is to be ‘SPECIFIC’.
That being said let’s get on with the tutorial so that you can start your blogging journey as soon as possible.
This tutorial will work in any niche you have chosen.
HOW TO START A BLOG
STEP-1: Choose A Niche
In layman language, A Niche is something that is related to a specific category of things or products that differentiate it from the others. Like – gardening, health, and fitness, fashion, etc.
Even before you buy your hosting, get a domain name, or do anything … the first thing you must do is choosing a niche.
The niche or sub-niche or micro-niche you choose to base your blogging will determine how fast you will make money out of your blog or make no money at all!
So, choosing your niche should be based on these two things:
The first criteria for choosing your niche should depend on how the particular niche you choose can make you money!
Are there enough products that you can promote or affiliate programs that you can join?
Can it make you money over and over again through affiliate products or offers?
Are the products in demand all through the year?
Can you market them to your audience?
If you are satisfied with your answers then check the second criteria.
Your passion should be secondary to profit when choosing your blog niche.
Many people emphasize picking a niche or topic that you have an interest in or are passionate about because you need to be consistently posting content relating to the topic you choose.
If you blog about something that you love, your readers will feel your passion too.
However, what if you write about something that doesn’t have a scope for marketing at all? Like sharing your adventures in Disneyland. You might have many followers and readers but you have to depend only on ads to monetize your blog and it will take a long time.
Now I want you to do something. Take a pen and a notebook or a piece of paper.
Write down at least 10 niches that you find it interesting.
Put the criteria questions against those niches.
The niche with the most positive answer would be your winning niche!
Do not wait to decide later. You have to do it now because this is the right way to start a profitable blog website.
If you are reading this, then I know either you want to start a blog, or you already started blogging but it didn’t take off as you expected it to be!
Either way, your purpose is to make money, right? So, I won’t keep you running around the bush and waste your time nor mine!
I blog because I want to make money. Yes, I want to make a living out of my blogs!
For me, reading and writing have been a passion that I am unable to quench because even before my schooling starts, books are my passion.
When I was in Grade-I, I read the whole of a small booklet of the English Dictionary to improve my vocabularies! Till my adulthood, not even a single piece of paper was thrown or taken without my permission at my home!
Writing and reading become a part of my life. Well, this might not be the case with everyone. Each one of us has our own passion in life.
You see, when you are passionate about things, there are sparks and liveliness in the way you talk about them. You are more than eager to share with everyone. So, it is easier to get a warm connection with other people.
But… even if it’s not your passion, you can still start your own blog and be successful BECAUSE the secret to making money blogging is talking about what people want and search for and giving them the solutions to the problems!
You can pick any niche topic on what your readers want and looks for, and be specific – See the problems and give solutions. Of course, you have to do your own research first.
You can’t just put out copy-paste pages or crabs. You have to read books and topics about what you want to blog about. Collect as much information as you could.
You need to understand it and then create your blog which is different and with originality (if possible). That’s it!
Once again, don’t worry If it’s not perfect, and you’ll never find it perfect either.
It’s perfectly alright as long as you give valuable information that solves the problems of your readers.
So, the question arises – How do you pick that specific niche that will make you money which can bring you passive stream of income?
In other words, what are the so called ‘ Evergreen Niches’ that you can base your blog upon?
These evergreen niches are never outdated and revolve around as long as human exist on the earth.
The following are the Evergreen Niches that are never outdated and are needed in our daily lives.
- Finance and Wealth
- Health and Fitness
- Working from home
- Personal Development
- Diet and Nutrition
These niches can be further broken down into smaller / micro niches that focus on only one particular topic or thing.
For Example: The Health and Fitness niche is very broad and the competition is relatively very high (means- many other people are in this niche), if you start a blog on say the keyword ‘ Health And Fitness’ there is a possibility that you will never rank in Google nor beat your competitors because there are hundreds of authority sites which already exist.
But say, if you pick a sub-niche for something like How To Lose Weight By Simple Exercises and so on… there are more chances for you to rank and be seen. You have to show creativity here.
Focus your blog only on the many simple and easy to do on the go, no special preparations needed exercises you could come upon, how these exercises work, how they burn the body fat and help to lose weight, and so on. I hope you got my point here!
Or it can be about Gardening. Understand what gardening is all about, how to start with gardening for a specific flower or plant, the difficulties you may be facing, tools you must have for that particular gardening, and so on…
In the end, you might come out with maybe 35 or 40 different pages about that particular gardening.
Someone looking for gardening solutions came upon your site, find it helpful, and share it with other people. Gradually, your visitors increase in numbers.
However, you need to understand all these won’t happen overnight! If you are consistent and deliberately produce contents with great quality content, your blog will gain momentum with time.
So now, take your time and decide what niche you will choose.
Until and unless you are clear on what niche you want to go for, do not move ahead. That means doing your Keyword Research.
First confirm your niche, the way you can make money with it.
I want to encourage you to go for low competition but high demand keywords.
Now, there are many tools available for keyword research. There is no need to go for the paid ones if you cannot afford it or do not want to invest on it.
Here are the list of free keyword research tools you can use.
- Google extention called Keyword Surfer. Just type in your chrome browser and you will find the link.
- Google Trends
- Sign up for a free trial of KWFinder by Mangools.
- Google Autocomplete
When you type in any keyword in the Google search bar, the keyword searched will autopopulated. That shows that people are searching for that particular keyword.
Use only 2 or 3 tools at the maximum as the more you use, you will find it more complicated because these tools works in different ways and the results they give will differ.
Now that you have come up with a great niche, you can go to the next step.
STEP-2: Decide On A Domain Name And Web Hosting
If you are planning to use free platforms, then domain name and hosting won’t be an issue.
There are some free platforms like WordPress.com (WordPress.org is not the same site as WordPress.com even if the name looks familiar), Blogger, Medium, Wix, etc where you can start your blogging journey.
The benefit is that your blog can be seen by many people too if your content is of great value.
Many bloggers used these platforms and you would find many people advising you to use these platforms if you are starting.
To be honest, free offers always come with limitations and you never know what is going to happen next! And they come with the site extension name along with yours. That is, you won’t be having ‘yourwebsite.com’ name only!
Let me explain…
I don’t want to take any risk with all my hard work and energy. To see one day, that my site is blocked or is taken down without any warning or notification? Because I am using a free platform that I have no control of? And why should you take the risk too?
That being said, if you are using free platforms, you have no right over your site. You have to follow whatever rights the site provider imposed!
If you are serious about starting a blog that can generate you monthly income, then I would recommend you to purchase your own domain name and web hosting from the very beginning.
If you are just starting, then I would recommend you to use either DreamHost or Bluehost for domain registration and web hosting. I do my website hostings with both. They also provide a free SSL Certificate.
What Is A Domain Name?
Domain: A domain is your identity on the Web. It is a naming system that allows people to easily navigate the servers and web pages.
It is like your Home Address.
Example : .com, .org, .info, etc.
What Is Web Hosting?
Web Hosting: A web host or web hosting is a business that provided the services needed for the website or web page to be viewed on the internet.
It is where the websites are hosted or stored on special computers called Servers.
To make it simple, a Web host is like the physical location of your home address (the land).
I would strongly recommend you not to buy a domain name alone because you need hosting for that domain and if you buy it separately, you have to pay for registration and stuff like that.
This is the basic requirement even if you don’t enroll yourself in any course or program.
The greater number of years you opt for, the greater your discount price will be!
I would recommend you go for the unlimited sites that allow you to add more sites if you want to go for more than one different niche in the future as it will help you save money in the future as you need not spend more bucks for upgrading your plan.
How To Choose A Domain Name
You can choose and use any name or word as your domain name.
Check out these points to choose a good domain name :
- Make it easy to type and remember – Having a catchy and memorable domain name that is easy to spell it out and say is essential.
- Use keywords and phrases that people search for as it helps in improving your ranking in the search engine.
- If possible try to use the keyword from your niche so that it will be easy to find in the search engine.
- If the domain name you want is already taken, adding simple words like ‘a’, ‘my’ or ‘the’ might help.
- Keep it simple – As far as a domain name is concerned, the more simple and descriptive your domain name is, the more people will find it easier to relate to what they want when they search for anything. So, keep your domain name simple. If possible, don’t use complex or mis-spelled words.
- Target your area – If your business is local, you can include the name of your city or state in it specifically.
- Avoid numbers and hyphens – Hyphens and numbers are often misunderstood because people who hear your website address might not know if it’s a numeric number or a word or they can misplace or forget the hyphens.
- Use an appropriate domain name extensions – extension like .com is the easiest to remember. You can use .info if your website is about information, or .org if it’s for an organization, .biz for business, and so on. The most common and costly domain extension is the .com as it is easy to know and people often relate to the .com for every website they heard of!
How To Set Up Web Hosting With Your Domain
Setting up a Web hosting is easy even for a non-techie person even though it is a bit more practical and needs steps that can be explained well with the instructions given in the web hosting itself.
Here let me show you how to set up a website with DreamHost.
- Go to DreamHost.com
- Click on the Hosting which is listed on the Menu bar.
Select the ‘Shared Unlimited option and click on the Sign-Up button.
You will then be shown the next step of choosing a domain. Select the ‘Register a new domain’ option.
Enter your decided new domain name and check the availability of the domain name by clicking the ‘search’ icon.
In case you already have a domain name, you can choose the ‘I already have a domain’ button.
You will see a page that will show that the domain name is available or is already taken.
If it’s available then click on the ‘Add for $0.00’ button.
You will be taken to the secure checkout page where you need to enter your card details and billing information. You will also get an option to pay via Paypal.
Once you filled in your details click on the ‘Add card’ button.
Then before you click on the submit button found at the end of the page, unselect the ‘DreamShield Protection’ which is for $3.00 per month. It’s optional. If you want to add it you can but it’s fine if you unselect it.
Then click on the ‘Submit Order ‘button. And you will be charged $35.40 only for a year’s hosting subscription.
WordPress is automatically installed so that you need not manually install it.
Once your payment is done, you will be redirected to the DreamHost dashboard.
Click on the Website button and finish your setup. You can also set up your official mail with your website name for free.
DreamHost also offers a free plugin builder called Boldgrid. You can use the themes if you want. But WordPress is easier to customize.
Add your email id and login detail for WordPress.
Your WordPress dashboard will look like this.
Now you are almost ready to start writing.
But there are few more things you have to do before that.
Go to Appearance > Theme
Change the theme if you do not like the default theme. You will see more than 3500+ themes to chose from.
Then, go to the Plugins > Add New
Add the following plugins one by one and activate them.
- Really Simple SSL – For SSL Certificate
- Elementor – Drag and drop page builder
- Contact Form 7 – For your audience to contact you
- Smush – To shrink or minimize the image sizes in your blog
- Yoast SEO – Ofcourse, for free SEO guide
Enter your site title and the tagline which is related to your website.
Then select the ‘Permalinks’
Then select the ‘Permalinks’
Change it to Post name.
Instead of your post showing something like this –https://passiveinflow.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=3706
It will show your site with an easy-to-read post name –https://passiveinflow.com/how-to-start-a-blog-and-get-paid
If you are completely new and have no knowledge about the website at all, you might not be clear with the instructions, I would suggest you check out those tutorials available on YouTube.
What you need to do is just input what you exactly want to know in the YouTube search button and you will see there are many tutorial videos that will show you how to do it exactly, step by step.
Make sure to check out the year when the video was uploaded in the video description in order to watch the latest ones.
And don’t lose heart if you couldn’t get it right the first few times, it’s okay. I literally installed my WordPress ten times before I get it right! That is how expert I am (lol).
NOTE: If you are creating more than one website with WordPress, you can use the same username.
Don’t feel overwhelmed! If I can do it, so can you! Even much better!
Then, go to Page > Add New
The difference with a page and post is that there is no comment section in the page setting.
STEP-3: Finding The Right Keyword Title
Before you even write your content, you must do keyword research using the tools which I mentioned before for researching your niche.
Researching your title keyword might take you a bit of time, but it is worth it because that will help you rank higher in search engines.
There is no point in writing a post with no search volume. If you find low competition keywords with high search volume, you can also use the exact keyword.
Now you are ready to start your first post.
STEP-4: Start Writing
Go to Post > Add New
Enter your catchy title and click the publish button.
Then click on ‘Edit with Elementor’ and you are good to go!
Above all, you need to invest your time massively at the beginning. As much as you gave your time for your job or maybe more!
I don’t mean to discourage you from saying this. What I intend to say is you really give the effort to make your blogging works!
It can take a long time and also some money to build and grow a blog because you need high-quality content that is of great value to the readers.
And this blogging thing does work. No doubt about it! Period.
Generally, for a new website with at least 30 pages or more, it took an average of 90 weeks to rank in Google unless it is something very specific and high demand site.
However, big authority websites with tons of traffic can even rank as fast as within 24 hours.
You don’t have to be an expert in starting a blog. It doesn’t have to be perfect either.
Originality is the key here. Your ‘Why’ this blog is started should focus on solving the problems and giving value to your readers.
You can search and read those blog posts which are related to your niche and take ideas from them. Do not copy them. Instead, create another post that is much better than what you saw and read.
If you are just starting, do not rush yourself. Take a good amount of time say at least a month or two to research and write your content.
After you are done, proofread them and also ask a friend or two to read them.
Install Grammarly, a free software that will automatically help you to correct any grammatical errors in your writing. It comes with a Free and Pro version. It really is a real deal and saves time!
The benefit of blogging is that, once you are set and started ranking, you need very little additional work – just updating or improving your content once or twice in 3 months. Yes, you heard me right!
Content Alone is Not the King anymore. What is most important is that YOU MUST UNDERSTAND YOUR AUDIENCE.
Your ‘WHY’ you started blogging in the first place should be BASED ON THE NEEDS AND SOLUTIONS OF THE PROBLEMS OF YOUR READERS. Because Your WHY is the only thing that will separate you from the other crowd.
STEP-5: Getting Traffic
By traffic, it means people visiting your site. The more traffic you get on your blog, the better chance you have to make money.
You need good traffic to be able to generate a steady income.
So, you can create more traffic through promotions on social media, word of mouth, building an audience or followers, collaborating with other bloggers.
It takes time to earn money but it is worth the energy and efforts when it does get start generating income.
You need to have patience and be consistent in what you are doing.
As long as you give value to your readers and your content is of good quality that gives solutions, you will gain traffic gradually.
Conclusion On How To Start A Blog And Get Money
If you look around or ask someone, mostly blogging has been the number one recommendation by many people and entrepreneurs to earn passive income.
Sometimes, they made it sound like it’s so simple and easy! But it is not that easy!
I don’t mean in anyways try to discourage you, but I want to tell you again that there is a lot of hard work involved during the initial stages of blogging – at least for the first three months.
By then, your knowledge will increase and you will understand many things and it will be much easier to manage as you continue on persistently.
