How To Become A Good Writer – Tips On How To Become A Better Writer

Sharing Is Caring

If you have the talent to write or are someone who wanted to write, these tips on how to write will help you.

There is no doubt a high demand for good writers, but it is also very competitive.

However, if you work hard and give your time, you can become a good and better writer! And there is also a useful software to help you scale within a short time!

Here are a few tips on how to become a good writer for beginners.

How To Become A Better Writer

1. Read, Read, and Read.

You can not become a good writer if you are someone who is lazy to read. You might be able to put up a few pieces here and there, but nothing substantial will come up.

So, the first thing to become a better writer is to read. Read articles or books as much as you can and try to find the reason why that particular article or book has touched you or interest you.

Consuming as much information from books as you can is one of the basic steps you can take in becoming a good and better writer. You can also listen to the audio versions of the books for your convenience.

In case you want to minimize the time to learn how to become a good writer, you can enroll in a course that will teach you how you can write your book in just 7 days!

The purpose is that you will become more and more skillful in creating books that have an impact on the lives of people around you and across the globe!

2. Reread Your Own Book/Work.

If you have written an article or book before, read them again and find out how you can improve your writing skills.

Assess yourself and acknowledge what you did wrong or right. Bring that change in your writings.

It is easy to appreciate ourselves for the hard work we have put through to create our own books.

I hate to admit this, but normally we used to overlook our own work. And so it is really easy to miss out where we need an improvement. So, you need to read and reread it again and again at least 3 times or more!

3. Let Someone Do The Proofreading.

As I mentioned earlier, we tend to overlook or miss certain mistakes when we read our own work.

If possible, get another person to proof your work. You can ask your friends or family members to read your writing and take feedback from them.

Ask them what they understand from your writings. If they are not clear about your writing, then you need to make some changes in your writing until the message you want to convey is clear and understood well!

Be ready to take any criticism with an acceptable heart and to improve your writing skills.

Some writers who really want to grow hired a professional proofreader who can give them the best outcome. Of course, it will cost you money. If you have the resources, it is one of the best ways to help you grow your writing career.

Some of the common places where you will find affordable proofreaders are Fiverr, Latium, People-per-hour.

4. Set A Time And Place.

Set up an hour or a few hours according to your convenience every day to write something. This is mandatory to improve your writing skill.

The benefits are not only this will gradually help you develop a writing habit, but it will also improve your writing skills tremendously!

The whole point is to find out a convenient time when your mind is more relaxed and you feel more productive.

Some people prefer to write in the early morning hours when their minds were fresh, while some prefer to write late at the night. The choice is yours.

Another important factor that will help you grow and become a good writer is having your own place to write.

By this, it doesn’t necessarily mean to have a separate room (if you have one, it will be good), so that there is the least possible distraction which can hinder your writing flow and thought processes.

However, it might not be possible with anyone. In that case, you can choose a time when you will most likely be disturbed like if you have kids, the best time would be you can utilize the time while they were in their schools.

Many times, noise and other sounds can become a distraction. You might not be able to concentrate wholly on your work. This is likely to happen if you do not have your own separate corner or place to write. In such conditions, you can use earplugs, which will help in reducing disturbing noises.

Or you can go to a quiet place like a park and write your book. However, the preparation to go out and your going and coming back will take some of your time.

You can utilize those time to ponder on what you want to include in your writing. That way you are still utilizing your time effectively.

On the contrary, a piece of soft music may inspire you. I sometimes play a piece of soft music (mostly instrumental ones) while I write. You can try out  Amazon Music which has millions of songs if you want.

5. Do Not Procrastinate.

Procrastination is the biggest enemy and killer of your ideas. Your ‘ I will do it later on’ thought can become one of your regrets.

Not a regret you would cry about, but the very thought of what you have missed will be enough to make you uncomfortable and will make you wish you could take back that time!

So, whenever you feel inspired to write, do not push the idea or that flow away for another time. Note them down that moment by any means!

You can keep a notebook or use your smartphone to write down your ideas. You can even record your voice using your smartphone. There are many ways if you really want to note down your thoughts. I use these types of Spiral pocket notepads as it is easy to carry them even in your pocket. You can find them in stationery shops too.

No wonder, some of the most interesting and intriguing ideas come at times when you are not in your writing chair!

Yes, many times, wonderful ideas and topics will hit your mind when it is not very convenient to write. Do not push that idea away. Just capture that zeal and flow when it comes to your mind at that time because you might not feel or remember that idea again if you procrastinate it for some other time.

I preferred to write down those ideas and thoughts in my phone notepad and then mail it to myself as it saves me time to rewrite them again by copying them from my notebook or audio records.

A few days back, while I was just lying on my bed, two ideas that needed be noted down came. Instead of picking up my phone or a notepad, I procrastinate and so I wasn’t able to remember what it was exactly.

What I remember was I’ve got those excellent odd ideas that popped up out of nowhere and all I knew was they were great ideas that will help my business. I used to note them down with any possible means I can, but this time, I was lazy! What a loss, because till today I wasn’t able to figure out what the ideas were! They were just gone! I do not want the same to happen to any writer.

So, say NO to procrastination.

6. Edit As You Go.

Editing your piece of work paragraph by paragraph as you write is one way to go especially if you are writing short essays or articles. Otherwise, you will spend time trying to locate some part of your writings where you need the correction done!

If you are writing a book, I would recommend you to continue writing until you are done with your section or outline of one of your sections.

If you don’t know how to create an outline for a book, you can have a look at ‘How to write a memoir outline’. The same principles are applicable.

It might save you time if you do not stop yourself to rewrite or reread what you have written to correct the sentences. This can hinder your writing creativity flow. Instead, write whatever comes to your mind at first and do the corrections later if you are writing a book.

7. Use Grammar Checker.

What would it look like if your writing is full of grammatical errors including spelling mistakes?

Even if your grammar is excellent, it is a time saver to invest in software that will check your spelling, punctuations, sentence constructions, etc.

I use Grammarly and also highly recommend it as it solved those mistakes and saves me a ton of time. You can register for free and try it out to see if it meets your expectation.

Whether you also use Grammarly or other software, using a grammar checker is a must-have for every writer!

8. Take A Break In Between.

This is not a compulsory thing to do, nevertheless, it helps in renewing your thinking process, especially to beat ‘writer’s block’ – literally where you have a thought block!

Taking a break in between your writings is one way to refresh your mind and renew your creativity. The time can be a few minutes to some hours, it is up to you.

It can also be taking a break to do some chores or making a cup of tea or coffee or even a short power nap.

This will give your mind some rest as you are focusing all your energy on a certain topic. and will help you with more ideas. Then start rereading your writing.

You will be surprised to experience more ideas that will come up to add to your writings.

Once you are done with writing a part of your piece, let your writing rest for a few hours or so.

9. Leverage The Power Of AI Content Creators.

Artificially generated content has taken the internet world by storm.

These artificial intelligence (AI) software are very powerful and use the latest GPT-3 (Third Generation Generative Pre-trained Transformer) which are trained to use the data on the internet to generate any type of content.

AI tools will generate large volumes of relevant text based on your input and they are capable of creating full blog posts, blog topic ideas, stories, slogans, landing pages, marketing copy, and much more by collecting data from millions of websites on the internet and gives you a unique version of the topic you want to write. The benefits these AI Softwares give are numerous and priceless!

Many writers leverage the help of artificial intelligent content creators to help in their writings. They were the greatest time-saver and increases your workflow more than 7x times! My favorite AI content creators are Jasper.ai and Rytr.me.

If you are using the help of any AI software, make sure you make some edits to give your content a more human-like feel!

This AI tool will give you more interesting ideas and plots that you would not have thought of before otherwise! And I must say they are a must-have to help you grow if you are seriously contemplating being an author!

10. Write Precisely To The Point.

Keep your writing to the point – direct, nice, and simple. Make your writing easy to read and understand. Whether you write fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, etc., be PRECISE and do not keep on beating around the bush just for the sake of making your article or book longer!

Focus on giving the best valuable information to your readers in the most consumable ways possible ways!

Remember, we are in a generation that needed something fast or instantly. People will love your work if it is filled will power-packed valuable gems even if it’s only a few pages.

For example, let’s take the book written by James Allen ‘As A Man Thinketh’. This book was only 100 pages and it has crossed millions of sales! Readers around the globe bought it not because of the length of the writings, but because of the values it provides.

Do not try to impress your readers with your vast collection of complex vocabulary that they need to grab a dictionary now and then to search for what you meant in your writings. The simpler, the better it will be!

I once read the whole dictionary to improve my vocabulary. It did broaden my vocabulary, but this might not be the case with most people.

It would rather be unpleasant to reach out to their dictionary online or offline now and then for a book they are reading.

Use simple words rather than words that are used rarely instead. You can even refer to a dictionary to find simpler words so that your readers need not find it hard to understand what you meant by it!

So, it is essential to write in such a way your readers will be able to grasp the whole meaning and plot with ease!

11. Do your research and writing separately.

If you are writing on something that is based on factual things, it will require you to do intensive research on the topic before you actually start to write.

I would recommend you set up a time to do your research for a certain topic and note them down separately so that you need not jump from research to writing as this will hinder your writing creativity and flow.

12. Write for a blog or newsletter.

This is most helpful for content creators whose focus is on articles or short essays. If you are just starting out as a freelancer, you can start writing for a blog or newsletter.

This will give you excellent exposure not only as a writer but also as a better writer.

The downside is you have to search online where there are open opportunities to write for companies. Some companies are on the lookout for competent writers. If you managed to strike a deal, you can be one of their ‘choice writers’.

You can register directly to Paid Online Writing Jobs here to save time and the headache of searching and waiting for approval for the writing jobs you have applied for! Try it out!

13. Join A Writer Community.

Do not be hesitant to tell others that you are a writer. This way, you might get good exposure and connections with other writers as well!

Do not try to be a ‘jack of all trades’ who tried their hands on every topic. Try to master some selected or specific niche.

This will come in handy as your exposure to other writers increases. By masting a specific skill on a niche, your work will be more polished and outstanding in comparison to someone who writes anything that comes their way!
