What to know before doing affiliate marketing
Sharing Is Caring

If you are reading this, then I assumed that you are into Affiliate Marketing or about to start your own affiliate marketing business and are searching for things related to the popular affiliate marketplace / Networks.

Whatever it may be, joining any affiliate program is easy and free but promoting those products do need effort and resources.

It is important to know that some affiliate partners give approval immediately while some might even disapprove of your request. And some affiliate partners might not even pay you for your hard work.

There are few things you should keep in mind and make sure of before you actually get started with affiliate marketing.

Out of the many things, here are 5 things that you must not overlook if you want to become a successful affiliate marketer –

1. Payment Method.

2. Minimum Payout Threshold

3. Cookie Length

4. Commission Type

5. Reputation Of The Affiliate Network

The following major criteria will help you avoid unnecessary headaches in your affiliate marketing business.

Let’s talk about them in detail.

#1. Payout Method

The first important thing is to check out the payout method which should be supported in your country.

And if you couldn’t find the payout method that does not work for your country, you can contact the affiliate manager through the contact form and try to work it out.

If it is not supported in any case, it’s better not to promote the product.

The common ways of payout methods used are:

#2. Minimum Payout Threshold

The minimum payout threshold is the minimum amount set up by the affiliate program for which you will start to get paid.

Some affiliate programs give up to as low as $10 but on average most minimum payout threshold is set around $50.

That means you won’t get paid until you reach the $50 mark.

Some affiliate platform pays you on autopilot – meaning when you reach the required payout threshold, the payment was done to your preferred account automatically. This is really a time saver.

However, with some affiliate platforms, you need to send a request for withdrawal.

Regardless of how it works, this autopilot payout system whether it is there or not should deter you from not joining the affiliate network especially if the commission they offer is good.

#3. Cookie Length

Cookies are very small text files placed on your computer by a web server when you view some sites online.

They are used to store data about you so that a web server doesn’t have to repeatedly request this information.

Your affiliate partners tracked you through cookies and give you commissions.

If you are wondering if Cookies are safe, let me assure you that cookie files cannot execute programs or carry out tasks. They cannot be used to view data on your hard drive or capture other information from your computer.

The standard cooking length is between 30-90 days after someone clicks your affiliate link. The longer the cookie length, the better.

You even get paid when products other than the ones you promoted are also brought.

For example: Amazon

If someone buys a product you promoted and also bought other things on Amazon, you will get the commissions for all too.

Most reputed affiliate networks provide the same advantages to their affiliates too.

Ensure that you check for –

  1. Standard cookie length (30-90 days).
  2. Commission on the sale of other products so that you will have the benefits even if you are a newbie affiliate marketer.

It is also important to know that The first affiliate link that the customer clicks will store the affiliate’s ID in a cookie and it cannot be overridden from the second link unless the cookie expires, or the customer clears their browser cookies and then clicks on the second link, or the Credit Last Referrer option is enabled, which can be disabled if you wish to!

#4. Commission Type

By default, most affiliate programs set the payout commission type as Revenue Share. That is some percentage ranging from as low as 2.5 – 100% of the sale.

Few offer a one-time payment for a certain amount like $50 or $100 for referring someone to their website or product.

It is always advisable to opt for Revenue Share so that you can earn the commission especially if the affiliate program offers recurrent commission.

#5. Reputation Of The Affiliate Network

There are many incidences of affiliates not getting paid. To avoid that, you should join an affiliate program that is reputed or you can do so through a reputed affiliate marketplace.

The advantages of joining an affiliate via a reputed affiliate marketplace are many.

The most prominent one can be the ease of applying for an affiliate link of different companies under one roof instead of separately searching for the particular affiliate company.

Conclusion On Affiliate Marketing Checklist

Most affiliate marketplaces are easy to join and they are free too.

However, some can be a pain-in-the-neck if you forget to do your homework.

As long as you check the above-mentioned criteria and were satisfied with their terms and conditions, you are good to go!
